Use of certain visual cues may enhance the illusion of depth in the picture space. One of such cues is obscure detail in the background. Our eyes cannot focus on everything. So, restricting the sharp focus to the main subject and blurring the background can provide more realistic effect than making everything sharp in the picture. Look at some examples.

A flower on a rock on Lake Superior. The lake is out of focus. I think it shows
how far is the top of the rock from the water.

These crab apples look like eye balls. And this is only because other apples
are out of focus.
Conclusion:
To show depth try to focus only on the main object of your picture.
