The use of backlight requires some practice and experience, but when it's conducted well, the effect of backlighting can be very appealing. You can get interesting silhouettes and glowing subjects in your pictures.
Be creative. Try to take pictures with the sun in front of you. Don't forget to protect your lenses form the direct sunlight. I use my palm for such protection.
