In almost every book on photography I read about the rule of thirds. If you divide your picture area into nine sections as shown below,

then the central four points (in red) - represent the key points of the composition and it is at one of these four points that you would place an important subject matter. This rule is not a must. This is just a "soft" recommendation which sometimes can help you to make a picture better.
The next two pictures show example of using the rule of thirds.
