Photographing people is not simple. Finding the best angle and lighting is a special art. Here I am going to describe just one common mistake: taking a photo in the sidelight without a flash. This mistake is illustrated in the picture below.

My friend took this picture of me on Lake Superior. I think using a flash would
make this picture better. However, my friend forgot about the flash. This is
definitely not a million dollar picture.

On the same day. I am in a shady place and the picture was taken using a flash.
I think this picture looks better than a picture above.
Conclusion:
Avoid taking picture when the sunlight makes shadows on the face
or use your fill-flash to get rid of the shadows.
