In our daily life we do not use special lights to take pictures. It is a good idea to come to a professional photo studio where a photographer can put special lights to make your portrait better. However, even for outdoor shooting you can take a better position to take pictures of people, where the sunlight is optimal for a portrait.
As to me I like backlight. It make nice colors of hair and the pictures look non standard. Look at some examples. These pictures were taken quickly, without any pretension to be a million dollar picture.
