Encouraging Your Child To Read
Submitted 12 May 2008

Establishing a love of books in your young child is an important tenet in their educational development later in life. Books promote an exploration of the imagination that is lacking in most other tangible areas of a child's life such as the television and many common (and popular) toys. But it is a love of books and all things associated with books that will lead your child to success, not just...

Self belief is incredibly important in this job. You can’t expect pupils to respond positively to you unless you believe, really believe, that you fully deserve their respect and compliance. The thought that you are the leader in the classroom must be at the forefront of your mind. If you give any sign at all that you are NOT in FULL CONTROL, children will sense this and exploit your weaknesses....

One of the most difficult skills to master as a teacher is classroom management. Unfortunately, if you can not master this skill you are not going to survive as a teacher, especially as a middle school teacher. Show And Tell
Submitted 12 May 2008

Imagine a classroom busy with children, arriving one by one to attend a day's class or workshop, as in the home school set-up. At the door way, a child lingers and hesitates to come in while she or he hangs on to mom's skirt or dad's shirt. Teacher looks on, approaches the child and encourages the child to come in , hoping that the child will readily agree to enter the room, hoping that not too...

First of all, it is important to have a firm grasp on precisely what a homeschool portfolio is. I spent the first few years of my son's life reading a lot of books about parenting and quite a few about homeschooling. I remember thinking something along the lines of "it's great that people can do that with their children, but I don't know if I could." Especially since my son was an only child, I didn't feel that family, friends, and acquaintenances would be supportive of him...

Home School VS. Public School
Submitted 12 May 2008

I am not a fan of the public school system. Not with numbers like... the nationwide grand mean in reading for home schoolers was at the 79th percentile, and the 73rd percentile for language and math. This ranking means home school students performed better than approximately 77% of the sample population on whom the test was normed. Nearly 80% of home schooled children achieve individual scores...

Have you ever encountered the word osmosis? Learning takes place through the process of osmosis. Even as soon as a child is born, the infant is immediately sensitive to his surroundings perceptually. Events around the child leads him to the earliest exposures of learning. The very young child sees, hears, smells, tastes, and touches. Structured learning in school is more formal yet the osmotic...

Eliminate Negative, Achieve Goals
Submitted 22 April 2008

The fourth letter in the word change is N. I'm using the N to remind us to eliminate negative to increase our probability of reaching our goals. Remember your math lessons; a double negative becomes a positive. No, no negative becomes positive! If you want to reach your goals, you'll need to believe that you can and you will.
