I'm not sure exactly why this is true; I think it's related to the way the English language is spoken. (Normally, we say, "If I had five dollars, I'd buy some milk," instead of, "If five dollars had I, I'd buy some milk," even though both are correct.)

With nCloth, Maya users finally have a simple method for handling falling leaves. One can also easily attach leaves to branches and have the attachments broken by windforces by using nCloth constraints with glue strength. The basic workflow is very simple. Make a paint effects tree, convert it to poly, select the leaves and make nCloth. What follows is a more detailed tutorial.

UV smoothing in Maya

There has been discussion again on Maya highend3d mailing list about the UV distortion caused by polygon smoothing in Maya. I have been working on this problem and devising solutions for a recent production, and as it's hard to explain verbally in a reasonably short email I thought it would be best to sum it up in some tutorial.

As you've seen, you can use a scalar variable to store a character string, an integer, or a floating-point value. In scalar variables, a value that was assigned as a string can be used as an integer whenever it makes sense to do so, and vice versa.

You could make a scratching post from a log or similar but there are so many available on the market which are quite inexpensive, that you're sure to find something suitable. Of course, you could always buy a tree in a pot, if you have the room for it and if you can anchor it to the floor or wall so that it doesn't fall over when the cat stretches against it.
